Ongoing eƌorts in
reducing plastics
and packaging
impacts
We continue to actively work with our Own Brand
Suppliers to identify and remove unnecessary plastic
packaging where it is not absolutely essential.
Our goal is to deliver 358,000kg of plastic reduction by
2025.
Through critical evaluation of New Product Development
(NPD), we ensure that all of our packaging is recyclable at
end-of-life wherever possible. To ensure plastic packaging
is recyclable, we are developing solutions which consist of
one of the three most widely recyclable polymers -
Polyethylene (PE), Polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene
Terephthalate (PET).
We are targeting alternative solutions for all uses of mixed
materials with a goal to deliver recyclable solutions for
these packaging formats, which have historically been
difficult to recycle.
Although 2020 brought challenges for packaging NPD and
innovation, we were still able to deliver 20,686kg of plastic
reduction by working with our suppliers to identify
opportunities in their packaging formats and materials.
In 2021 to date, we have reduce a further 13,394kg of
plastic from own brand products. With a pipeline of
numerous live projects, we expect to deliver further
reductions by the end of 2021.
Our total own brand plastic packaging reduction since July
2020 equates to 30,080kg.
Our horizon pipeline for longer-term strategic plastic
reduction and recyclability projects extends through to the
end of 2023.
We are pleased to confirm that our own brand packaging
which we place onto the market has improved in its
recyclability and recycled content. Please note, all PRN
data is calculated on a calendar year, so we won't have
2021 data until early 2022.
All Bidfood's Own Brand Corrugated Cases
and Trays are 100% recyclable.
A key area of focus for 2021 has been to be
ready for the UK Plastic Tax. The tax comes
into effect in April 2022. We have attended
many packaging industry webinars including
HMRC's briefing.
We have briefed and shared the UK Plastic
Tax throughout the business. All our internal
Teams and leadership team are aware of the
implications of this new tax and the focus it
requires. We're working closely with our own
brand suppliers, evaluating opportunities to
action change and mitigate the tax.
We have numerous live projects including
new packaging innovation, to ensure that we
are well positioned to reduce and replacing
plastic where possible. We are increasing the
recycled content of plastic material to a
minimum 30%, where it safe to do so.
