Salt reduction
In the latter part of 2020, Public Health England
(PHE) issued the government's fifth set of
voluntary salt reduction targets for industry to
achieve by 2024. These targets are based
around the 2017 targets, with revisions made
where it is believed that there is further
opportunities for reducing salt, including
additional categories to increase scope.
We recognise that achieving the public health
goal of consuming no more than 6g of salt per
person per day will necessitate further action
across the whole industry, government, NonGovernment Organisations (NGOs) and
individuals. As a result, we've committed to
working towards the new salt reduction targets
by 2024 across the own brand portfolio.
Subsequently, our own brand range has been
reviewed against the new categories for the
2024 targets and identified all the products
within scope. Our new policy has been
incorporated into supplier engagement and is
now part of our own brand standards.
Furthermore, we have established a baseline for
own brand products versus the 2024 targets and
now track progress against these targets. Both
own brand and branded foods can now be
reported on against the new 2024 salt targets -
contact our Advice Centre for more information.
For transparency, we are showing our status,
which is likely to have been impacted by the delisting of a range of products.
Sugar reduction:
Disruptions due to Covid have continued to
impact our sugar reduction strategy. However,
we are still committed to reformulating own
brand products that contribute the most to
sugar consumption.
Despite this, we have managed to achieve a
16% reduction in sugar in our Everyday
Favourites Ready to Bake Milk Chocolate
Cookie Dough. This brings our total of
reformulated products up to 43 own brand
products that have been reformulated since the
start of our strategy. L38
