Managing the risk
of modern slavery
in our operations
In December 2020 we trained our HR Operations
team in managing their role in recognising and
responding to the risk of modern slavery, who
subsequently engaged their General Managers
and Heads of Operations in their role and our
increased focus in this area. We also produced
a How to Recognise and Respond to signs of
modern slavery, human trafficking and
exploitation guide which is available to all
employees on our process library.
In January 2021 we launched two e-learning
modules, one for all Bidfood employees and a
second module focused on supply chains,
targeted at relevant teams. Completed and
passed by 65% of our employees to date L15
(as at 5th July 2021), the module for all
employees includes Do the Right Thing, an
online video created by the GLAA (Gangmasters
and Labour Abuse Authority) showing the right
way to respond to suspicions of exploitation. All
employees should have completed this by the
end of September 2021.

In March 2021, the increased focus on managing
the risk of modern slavery in our operations and
supply chains was emphasised by our CEO in
our leadership conference. We also produced
posters for sites to display, highlighting the
different sources of help for anyone needing
help or advice in this area. L19

Supporting young
women and girls
to become
sustainability
leaders and
change makers
We continue to be a corporate supporter of
Catalyse Change, an organisation that
recognises that girls and young women are
under-represented in leadership roles, and often
lack the confidence to realise their potential to
become change-makers for a more sustainable
future. L20 One of their initiatives is to run an
annual bootcamp which aims to inspire and
equip women with the confidence, skills and
mentors they need to make a positive difference.
They proactively help young women who require
bursaries to participate, and this is possible
thanks to corporate sponsors.
In November 2020 our Head of Sustainability,
Julie Owst, enjoyed contributing to their Mock
COP Fringe Event; Our Climate Vision: From
Experience to Action, where she shared both the
rewards and challenges of driving a
sustainability agenda in the corporate world,
encouraging young women to follow this line of
work. The event also shared findings from
original research about how people have
experienced the climate crisis and encouraged
people to express their vision of a greener and
fairer world through craftivism. She also
contributed to their Green Careers course in
June 2021, encouraging young women to take a
greater interest in food sustainability. L21
